Prosenjit Chatterjee, on Where The Heart Is.
Prosenjit Chatterjee, one of Bengal's favourite sons, invites you into his picture-perfect home on Asian Paints Where The Heart Is. Celebrate his love for his city, and his deep love for cinema, in this beautiful episode.
Prosenjit Chatterjee’s home ’Utsab’ has been styled by him with perfect depth and substance, in line with the principles of film-making. Lacquered wooden furniture and soft-coloured walls are characteristic of this culturally-aligned, modern Kolkata home.
The historical relevance of the house is noteworthy. It was here that Satyajit Ray filmed the 1966 classic, Nayak, which makes this home a revered and symbolic property in the annals of Bengali cinema. Everything in Utsab has been handpicked and designed by Prosenjit. He chose a home that is more retro than contemporary and has generously-adorned it with artefacts and showpieces that resonate the essence of Kolkata.
Prosenjit spends a lot of time in his study, which is neatly laid out with books and family memorabilia. The work desk is deliberately positioned to overlook the beautiful greenery outside the room, which offers him a dose of inspiration. It’s here that Prosenjit delves into scripts and ideas and embodies the characters that are cherished by many. A prized assortment of movie posters from across eras are neatly laid out in albums or suspended from frames within the well-organized study.
The meeting room hosts social interactions and has ample seating space. It is designed to accommodate over forty visitors and is frequented by Prosenjit’s colleagues and fans. The walls in this room are festooned with his favourite pictures and sketches. Tea coasters paying homage to the charming ‘Bumba Da’ can be spotted here. The dining room is reserved for special occasions. The large dining table offers ample seating and is neatly laid out with china and vintage candle stands.
Prosenjit’s home truly echoes the spirit of Kolkata with its elegant retro décor, the customary picture frame of Rabindranath Tagore and the welcoming warmth that the city is come to be known for. For him and his family of three, Utsab is certainly where the heart is.
